Lige "Boss" (father of Willard) moved his family to Tulare from Imperial Valley around 1925/26. The Woods are originally from Mississippi and Oklahoma.
Family history has Elija (father of "Boss") escaping from Mississippi, being chased by several hundred white men for killing a hite man and taking a considerable amount of money. After being shot in the shoulder with a 3030 slug he managed to crawl in some brush and hide. He was found by some indians who nursed him back to health and helped him find his way to Oklahoma and then he eventually came to California.[web.FTW]
